Tutor (Fire and Security) - London

    About the Role

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on engineer who is ready to transition off the tools and into a rewarding career in education. This is a unique opportunity to take the knowledge and expertise you have built over your career and use it to directly shape the next generation of qualified engineers.

As an Engineering Tutor, you will deliver engaging and practical training to students aged 16 to 40, supporting them on their journey to achieving recognised engineering qualifications. Your students will range from school leavers taking their first steps in the trade to experienced adults pursuing a career change or upskilling — and your real-world experience will be invaluable to all of them.

In return, you will be fully funded and supported through the EAT (Engineering Assessor & Tutor) examination — a lifetime qualification that formally recognises your skills as an educator and opens doors across the vocational training sector.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Deliver structured and practical engineering training sessions to students aged 16–40 across varying skill levels
    • Plan and prepare lesson content, assessments, and practical exercises aligned to engineering qualification frameworks
    • Monitor and support individual student progress, providing constructive feedback and pastoral guidance where needed
    • Maintain accurate records of attendance, progress, and assessment outcomes in line with awarding body requirements
    • Work collaboratively with curriculum leads and other tutors to continuously improve course delivery
    • Ensure all training environments meet health, safety, and compliance standards
    • Act as a mentor and role model, drawing on practical industry experience to inspire and motivate learners
    • Participate in quality assurance activities, standardisation meetings, and professional development

    Essential Requirements

    Experience & Qualifications

    • Proven, hands-on experience working as a qualified engineer in a relevant discipline
    • Demonstrable experience training, mentoring, or supervising apprentices in a workplace setting
    • A relevant engineering trade qualification (e.g. City & Guilds, NVQ Level 3, HNC/HND or equivalent)
    • Strong working knowledge of health and safety practices within an engineering environment

    Skills & Personal Attributes

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage learners of all ages and backgrounds
    • Patient, approachable, and enthusiastic about sharing knowledge and developing others
    • Organised and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage records and assessments effectively
    • Confident working both independently and as part of a wider teaching team
    • A genuine passion for vocational education and raising the standards of the engineering workforce

    Desirable Requirements

    • A teaching or assessor qualification (e.g. PTLLS, AET, TAQA, A1/D32 or equivalent) — although full training will be provided if not already held
    • Previous experience delivering structured training in a college, training provider, or apprenticeship setting
    • Familiarity with awarding body standards and qualification frameworks (e.g. City & Guilds, EAL, IMechE)

    What’s on Offer

    • Competitive salary of £55,000 per annum
    • Fully funded EAT (Engineering Assessor & Tutor) qualification — a nationally recognised, lifetime tutoring credential
    • A structured induction and ongoing professional development programme
    • The opportunity to make a genuine, lasting impact on students’ careers and lives
    • A supportive and collaborative working environment with experienced education professionals
    • Career progression opportunities within the training and education sector

    About the Candidate

The ideal candidate is a skilled and experienced engineer who has reached a point in their career where they are ready for a new challenge — one that keeps them connected to the engineering world while allowing them to give back to the industry. You will be comfortable working with people of different ages, backgrounds, and ability levels, and you will understand the value of practical, real-world experience in the classroom.

You do not need to have a formal teaching background to apply. What matters most is your engineering expertise, your experience with apprentices, and your commitment to developing others. Full training and qualification support will be provided.
